TYPES OF BREAST IMPLANTS

There are two basic types of breast implants, gel-filled breast implants and saline-filled implants

Gel-fill material (silicone)

Silicone Material is derived from silicon, a semi metallic or metal like element that in nature combines with oxygen to for silicone dioxide, or silica. Beach sand, crystals and quartz are all silica; in fact silica is the most common substance on earth. Heating silica with carbon at a high temperature can produce silicon. Further processing can convert the silicon into a long chemical chain, or polymer, called silicone-which can be a liquid, gel, or a rubbery substance. Various silicones are used in lubricants and oils, as well as in silicone rubber.

Are silicone implants safe?

Special studies have been done and have determined that much higher levels of silicone have been found in cow’s milk and commercially available infant formulae than are found in the breast milk of women with implants. The Institute of Medicine concluded, “There is no evidence that silicone implants are responsible for  any major diseases of the whole body. Women are exposed to silicone constantly in their daily lives[1]

Saline-filled breast implants

These are filled with salt water, so that if they leak it is absorbed by the body naturally. But they just don't feel like or behave like natural breast tissue does. Some patients observe something like "plopping" with movement. There is s 20% deflation rate with these implants even from the best manufacturers. Deflation is revealed immediately when the breast suddenly reduces in size.

Silicone vs Saline Implants

Silicone on the other hand is much more similar to the structure of breast tissue and therefore it's look is natural. There is no sound phenomenon by moving. The cohesive gel implants don't leak - they remain intact.

The biggest improvement over the last five years has been the cohesive gel (or "gummy bear") implant which has made sure that the implant maintains its integrity even in the most adverse of conditions.

These days it is not even a question as to whether to use Saline implants. Even the FDA in America has seen the light and re-released Silicone implants into their market 3 years ago.

Implant Shape

Depending on the breast shape you hope to achieve, you and Dr. Lovric may choose either a round or contoured implant. Contoured implants have a teardrop shape and can provide patients with a more natural looking breast. High profile implants are used by women who desire greater projection and have a narrow chest wall.

Implant profile

These days there is demand for bigger and bigger implants and hence the base on which these are placed require a taller or more projecting implant to get that fuller effect so popular. Dr Lovric tends to use the moderate profile implant, but has access to high profile implants in the range., However he never compromises on creating that natural look of a nice take-off with the implant situated behind your nipple-areola complex.
