PRE-OPERATIVE HEALTH CHECK
Ensure your health status by consulting your General Practitioner and
get a medical report
prior to departure.
Bring all routine medication with you as well as a few extra.
If you intend to travel beyond Cape Town please contact the local Health
Department for
advice on Malaria areas.
DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT)
The biggest risk for long haul flyers is Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT);
this is the formation of
a blood clot in the deep veins of the legs. The blood clot can break off
and travel in the blood stream to the lungs as a pulmonary embolism
(PE). Pulmonary embolisms can cause problems
with breathing, blood flow in the lungs and can even be fatal.
Prior to undergoing surgery, it is important to have perspective on DVT,
its causes and risk factors and what you can do to minimize the chance
of its occurrence.
Preventative Measures:
- Dr. ink plenty of fluids; water in particular;
- Avoid sleeping pills and alcohol on the flight;
- Avoid risk factors such as the oral contraceptive pill, etc. If you
are on the pill, it is
recommended that you stop taking it one month prior to surgery. Don’t
forget to take
other contraceptive measures!
- STOP SMOKING:
Smoking not only increases the risk of DVT but also increases the risk
of other post- operative complications;
- Wear graduated compression stockings such as TED on the plane and in
surgery
- Exercise on the flight e.g:
Every hour do knee bends, ankle rotations, wiggle toes, and walk around
when possible.
Check your in-flight magazine for further information.
Two weeks prior to surgery, the following medication and herbal remedies
should not
be taken. The use of these products will increase bleeding during
surgery. Please discuss any chronic medication with Dr. Lovric, before
hand.
